Sentences, not just words

Memrise built its name on community courses, then removed them from the app in March 2024 [1]. What remains in-app are Word Lists that pull from Memrise’s dictionary [3]. That works when the word is there; it does not give you the sentence you need to say tomorrow.

PhrasiGo starts from the sentence. Type it in your language and it comes back translated, with both gendered forms, a natural voice recording, a phonetic guide for non-Latin scripts, and a meaning behind every word.

Memory

FSRS, not a fixed interval ladder

Memrise reviews a word on a fixed ladder, from four hours to six months [4]. PhrasiGo runs FSRS-4.5, which learns each phrase’s own stability and difficulty from your answers and brings it back just before you would forget it. The Progress tab forecasts the week, and the Memory Reef shows every phrase as a fish that gets hungry when it is due.

AI tutor

Talk, without the Pro limit

Memrise launched MemBot in 2022 and gates the fuller experience behind Pro [6]. PhrasiGo’s Talk is included: ten scenarios, a level selector from A1 to B1, voice or text, and a tutor briefed on your saved phrases so the conversation gives you a reason to use them. Corrections are gentle and explained; the closing report lists phrases worth saving.

Motivation

A streak you can keep, and leagues you can trust

Memrise says it stepped back from streaks and points because they can feel like pressure [4]. PhrasiGo keeps them and removes the pressure a different way: any practice day keeps your streak, freezes are earned and applied automatically, and leagues promote you for clearing a weekly XP threshold rather than for beating strangers.

Questions people ask

Is PhrasiGo really free, or is there a catch?
There is no paid tier in the app right now and there are no ads. Instead of a paywall, PhrasiGo has fair-use limits so nobody can run up the AI bill: signed in with Google, you can add 100 new phrases a day, do 200 speaking exercises a day and hold 30 AI conversations a day. Without an account the limits are lower. Everything else, including the whole guided course, is open.
Did Memrise really remove user-created courses?
Community courses were removed from the Memrise app and main site on 31 March 2024 and moved to a separate web-only site. In-app you can now create Word Lists, which draw from Memrise’s dictionary. See sources 1 to 3 below.
Can I import my existing cards or word lists?
Not yet. There is no file import, so you add sentences one at a time. In practice that is fast: you type one sentence and the translation, audio, gendered forms and word meanings are generated for you. You can export everything you have built as a JSON file at any time.
Does PhrasiGo have native-speaker videos like Memrise?
No. PhrasiGo uses natural neural voices with per-word timing, so you can tap any word to hear it alone. If watching real people say each phrase is the thing you love about Memrise, that remains its advantage.
Is PhrasiGo available on iPhone?
PhrasiGo ships on Android through Google Play today. The iPhone version is built from the same code and is in testing; it will appear on this site the day it is live on the App Store.
